| Hanging out in Rio: You might have heard some bad things about Rio and as with all rumors there is an element of truth. Yes, Rio can be dangerous but the risks are minimal as long as you pay attention to a few personal rules. If you do so, you can have a good time in Rio without worries. Sometimes it's better to spend a little bit more money to do something with a guide or take taxis instead of buses. People in Rio tend to help foreigners but they also like to overcharge...especially on the beach, so always ask for the price before you accept anything. A tip - Quanto custa? (How much is it?). If you don´t understand Portuguese, point at some paper and hand them a pen...they will get the message. Money: One of the biggest problems for foreigners in Rio is money. Don't take much money with you. You don't need more than 150 Reais for one day if you are not going shopping or to an excursion.Documents: Try to carry any document with a photo besides your passport. If you don´t have anything else, make a photocopy. It is cheap. To replace your passport is a nightmare. It takes time and money.Things that happen when you travel: Sometimes tourists are mugged because they are tourists. That's the only reason. It happens everywhere in the world but don't be afraid of Rio because of it. |
